The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) was established in 1999 to drive business growth, facilitate research and commercialize innovation in globally significant areas of science and technology through partnerships, expert advice, community development, business incubation, youth outreach and sector development activities.

SSMIC operates a business incubator and provides business support services and undertakes market development projects in the region. Two key market development projects include the operation of an internationally recognized Community Geomatics Centre (CGC) and the implementation of the community’s Smart Energy Strategy. The CGC operates a unique multi-enterprise GIS platform that includes the SSM PUC and provides an incredible resource for assisting energy project development, energy planning and grid operations. The Smart Energy Strategy was developed with community stakeholders with a goal to continue the positive momentum the region has experienced with renewable energy projects; conservation and the use of innovative energy technologies.
